"Tough Mudder is a 18 kilometre and 26 obstacle course in mud, designed to drag you out of your comfort zone by testing your physical strength, stamina, and mental grit. With no podiums, winners, or clocks to race against, it’s not about how fast you can cross the finish line. Rather, it’s a challenge that emphasises teamwork, camaraderie, and accomplishing something almost as tough as you are." Tough Mudder Australia, 2016
I thought I was fairly tough. You don't reach nearly 50 years old without overcoming the challenges, obstacles and hiccups that life throws down at you! Tough Mudder tests every fibre of your being. Not just the physical toughness - you need to ignore the scrapes, bruises, leg cramps and the occasional mouth full of mud. More importantly - you draw on your mental toughness, every step of the way.
At 4km I thought 'this is so much fun and what a great way to spend a Sunday.'
At 6km I couldn't believe how strangers were becoming friends. This happens really quickly when you need a push in the butt to get over an obstacle from someone you have never met.
At 8km the mud I had collected in my clothes, hair, shoes and my ears was starting to weigh me down.
At 10km my calves were cramping so badly I could hardly talk.
At 15km I knew if I started crying I would not be able to stop. I dug deep. I didn't go any faster but I drew on the mental toughness you need to 'keep going and not give up.'
At 18km I was shocked by an electric current not once, but 5 times. But with my team mates, I had completed my first Tough Mudder.
I have never work so hard for a headband, T-Shirt and a cold beer.
Should you sign up next year? Absolutely.
